Thoughts From My Inbox

February 11th, 2022

SIM Swapping, “Like” Hiding, and Jumpsuits

Well, I had a whole mess of thoughts for you, and then my browser crashed for no apparent reason.  It’s been that kind of day.  So, there was something about finishing our kitchen cabinet project and a mention of today being my mom’s 89th birthday.  Make sure to wish her a happy one.  And we’ll leave it at that.

Something About…

Phishing Attacks

Phishing is the most common type of attack leading to a data breach, and most users aren’t able to determine legit emails from phishing emails.  If you’re interested in security training for your team, let us know.  In the meantime, here’s a breakdown of three lesser known but just as productive phishing attack types.

Rugby

Rugby looks like kind of a cool sport, although I’ve never really understood it, beyond the fact that you can’t throw any forward passes.  We caught a game a few years ago in London, and I might sit and watch a minute or two once a year if it’s on tv.  The Six Nations tournament just started last weekend and there was something about it in my inbox (being a sports fan in general, I’m familiar with the event), so I thought I’d share…

Wonderstruck

Our friends at Elevation Group just announced the lineup for Wonderstruck 2022, and it’s a good one, headlined by Lumineers and Vampire Weekend (I know where I’ll be on July 9 and 10!).  Tickets are on sale now, and if you’re a fan of live music, I’d suggest you buy a couple.

Colors as NFTs

Have you ever wanted to own (and name) your own color?  Well, The Color Museum gives you the opportunity to do so, in the form of an NFT.  Somebody please bring me the person who just invested in ‘shitake mushroom’ (the color we just painted our kitchen cabinets) or Pantone 197 (which seems to match the color of the pink pants that I’m wearing today).  I’d be happy to take all of your money.

Jumpsuits

Who knew that the specifications for a ski jumper’s jumpsuit could be an 11 page document?  A handful of competitors were disqualified from an Olympic ski jumping event earlier in the week due to improper suits (I still haven’t found an article that says what was improper). Included in one piece was a link the FIS document specifying exactly how the suits are measured and must fit.  Huh.

Bitcoin Hackers
Lots of people have made plenty of money on Bitcoin. This couple, for example, had $71M in Bitcoin back in 2016, and it’s now worth $4.5B (as in billion).  Sadly for them, the Feds have now taken back $3.6B of that crypto… because all of it was stolen in a hack the couple pulled off six years ago.  Looks like she’ll have to go back to her rap ‘career’.

Instagram Likes
Ever wanted to hide your ‘likes’ on Instagram (those that like your posts or others)?  Now you can.
SIM Swapping
Consider this  another reminder to use multifactor authentication, and not the kind that sends a text message to your phone. Cybercriminals are now using social engineering, amongst other methods, to switch SIM cards on unsuspecting users’ phones.  Once the card has been switched, the hacker can divert calls and messages to their own phone, then change passwords to gain access to bank accounts.
Security Updates

This week’s security updates and alerts include one from the FBI regarding LockBit 2.0 ransomware (for your technical people in the crowd), a handful from Adobe, including Photoshop and Illustrator, for you creative types, a few from Apple, and a joint alert from US, UK, and Aussie officials regarding global ransomware attacks against critical infrastructure.

I had even more down here when things crashed, and I’m not going to bother to think it all through again.  Bengals and Rams –   I’m pulling for the Buckeyes (five for the Bengals, one for the Rams). Olympics- Chloe Kim won, Shawn White was close, Mikaela Shiffrin needs to show what she can really do. USA/Canada hockey tonight at 11:10.  Women beat the Czechs last night 4-1 after a scoreless first period in which the US outshot the Czechs 18-0.  Russian figure skater caught doping.  Shocker.

Have a great weekend!

Best,

Jim
