Thoughts from my inbox

June 16th, 2023

Sorry to miss you all last week.  We took off early Friday morning for a quick trip to NYC to see our son, his new apartment, and meet his girlfriend’s parents. We also had our usual dinner with a bunch of his roommates and buddies, something that has now earned the title of “dad dinner”. I know they all love it when somebody’s mom and dad show up for the weekend!  We missed the orange smog by a day, and as usual, ate a lot and walked a lot more.  Now I’m back at it, and have hackers for hire, cheese rolling, and the MOVEit breach.  Enjoy!

Something about ...

Hackers for Hire

According to this New Yorker article, India is the best place to go if you’re looking to hire hackers.  Don’t tell anyone that you heard it from me, though…

Cheese Rolling

Last week it was cheese chasing in Gloucestershire, England.  This week it’s cheese rolling in Italy.   My back hurts just watching it.

Real Estate

Usually the crazy Zillow Gone Wild listings I have are for places other than Ohio.  In this case, you can go see this one yourself, in Akron. While there’s no wallpaper, most of the walls are covered in murals (as are many of the ceilings) and there is a lot of painted wood trim (door frames, window frames, and baseboards).  And if you’d rather be on the water, how ’bout a lighthouse at the west end of Cleveland Harbor?  How cool would that be?!?!

Netflix Passwords

Netflix is sticking by their plan to ban password sharing (or charge you for it), and while one article shows that the number of new users is increasing, another tells us that users are cancelling in favor of getting hacked Netflix credentials from the Dark Web.  Hvae you (or somebody you share with) lost access recently?  Did you cancel the account in favor of streaming elsewhere?  We (my wife) just lost access to HBO Max, right as Succession was wrapping up.  After three+ years of using our son’s ex-girlfriend’s parents’ HBO password, they shut her down with just two episodes remaining.  I think the timing was on purpose.  So, she had to sign up for her own account.  Because we need another streaming subscription.

MOVEit

I started seeing some things about MOVEit a week or two back, and when it made the national news this morning, I figured I should dig through my inbox and see what I had.  MOVEit is a file transfer software used by large corporations, universities, and federal agencies, amongst others, many of which have recently been hacked and suffered data breaches.  While security patches have been pushed out by the developer, they don’t seem to be working very well, as the hacks and breaches continue to make the news.  If you work somewhere that uses MOVEit, you should be on alert.

Saw an interesting statistic this morning about the influx (small, but an influx nonetheless) of people to Cleveland over the past couple of years (see image above).  I’ve spoken to some and heard of many others who’ve come to Cleveland from the coasts, now that they can work remotely.  Why pay San Francisco real estate prices when you can get five times the house for 1/5th the cost, and not deal with the traffic (or other issues)?  Good to see that the anecdotal evidence has actually proven to be true.

I’ll leave you today with news about a gravel road bike race from this past weekend.  Ashton President/Founder Jim Millican has been a bike rider/racer for just about as long as I’ve known him, and since he reads this publication every now and then, maybe he’ll find interest in this.

Hope you enjoy the weekend, and if you’re celebrating, Happy Father’s Day!

Abbey
