Thoughts From Abbott’s Inbox July 3rd, 2024

I’m working (very) remotely this week and into next, after having been off for a couple of days at the end of last week. I had every intention of sending something out last Friday, but the darn marketing software failed on me, just as I was trying to hit the “send” button.  So, rather than make you spend two weeks wondering where I am, I figured I’d send something today.  We’ll keep it short and sweet to match the three day work week…

Something about ...

Cell Phone Outages

As we crossed into Canada last Thursday, I realized I suddenly had no cell service. Odd for two reasons; one, we both have international plans, and two, Nancy still had service. It turns out that there was a widespread outage across multiple carriers for people traveling internationally. Yet it didn’t effect all users.  Once I was able to get online, I did a little digging and found a CBS article including a gem of a comment from a user calling it a ‘dangerous’ situation, as people couldn’t see a map, get an Uber, or manage their bank accounts.  Or so he claimed on X (Twitter).  Anybody else see the irony?

An old friend of mine spent a year towing a 25′ long bottle of A1 Sauce around the country (it opened up into a giant grill on which he cooked steaks with which to sample the A1), so whenever I see Oscar Mayer’s Wienermobile, I think of George (and I wonder if the former New York state representative referred to his car by the same name).  If you know of any rising college seniors, they can make $35,600 straight out of school in the spring of 2025…  In the meantime, enjoy your hot dogs tomorrow, knowing there will be a few extras for you as Joey Chestnut has been banned from the annual Nathan’s competition.

Car Sales

You might not be able to purchase your very own Wienermobile, but it sounds as though car dealerships are back up and running, albeit a billion in the hole after the recent CDK cyber disruption.  Gotta wonder if the company will still be in business at this time next year, after the variety of lawsuits that are sure to follow this fiasco.

Car Dealers

If you were planning to buy a new car this weekend, you might want to sit and watch the hockey game instead.  On Monday morning, Travis sent me this post about a dealer in Las Vegas being hacked last week, and the claim of millions of dollars in lost revenues.  And then this morning, another dedicated reader (thanks Jen B.) sent me a piece about dealership software provider CBK being taken down for the second day in a row, and effecting 15,000 dealers across the country.

Jim Millican wants you to remember that the 2024 Tour de France is underway.  If you want his insight as to be the best legs of this year’s event, drop him a line. And in the meantime, here’s hoping you have a happy Independence Day!
