It’s hard to believe it’s already Friday. I’m off today with family coming to town tonight and Christmas shopping to be done, so I wrapped this up last night. Or so I thought. Still poking at it this morning. Anyway, the week seemed to go by really quickly and I’m surprised that I had enough items to put a newsletter together. Security vs. Convenience
I tell prospects all the time that we are very uptight about security, both as it relates to our network and to those of our clients. At the same time, I explain that we also realize that too much security can be detrimental to one’s ability to do their daily work. So, it’s a fine line between securing a network and making it impossible to work. Passwords, multifactor authentication, and human error are three key factors in securing (or risking) a network.
Amazon Cars
Two things I can’t stand, Amazon and car shopping, are now connected. If you like to shop on Amazon and don’t like car shopping, you can now buy your Hyundai online. Have fun with that one…
Mocha Mousse
For those of you who haven’t already sought out this information, the Pantone color of the year is… Mocha Mousse! Keep your eyes open for Post-It notes (and I’m sure many other items) in this color that is described as “a versatile light brown that can reflect both luxury and an alignment with the natural world.”

If you’re a CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) or your company has one, you might want to look into new insurance available for that role. Where directors and officers have always been eligible for D&O insurance, CISOs have often been left out in the cold. And with the risk that they face due to cybercrime, it seems only fair that they can now get their own coverage.

My buddy Kurt is usually good for an interesting article or two a couple of times each month. This one mentions that there is almost one million miles worth of data cable on the world’s ocean floors. And as we’ve seen recently, those cables, when cut/broken/failed cause big problems for internet users around the world.

Only 11 shopping days left before Christmas, so if you need some not yet last minute ideas; We have Popular Science and its list of the top 50 innovations of 2024, including drum kits, headphones, gaming keyboards, and supersonic jets, as well as Rolling Stone’s list of best technology gifts for 2024. Surprisingly, they don’t all have to do with music/audio.

And while it’s not baseball season in Cleveland, it’s rarely football season… So, I had to acknowledge the fact that Indians radio announcer Tom Hamilton was just elected to the broadcasters’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He should’ve been there years ago, but I’m glad he finally made it. Crain’s shared a couple of classic Hammy calls; the article is behind a paywall, so here they are (Rajai Davis Game Seven Homer and “Down Goes Anderson!“, one of the best calls of all time). Baseball season is just around the corner!
As for football, Army/Navy is tomorrow and always a fun game. Go Army! And, if you’re a gambler, I’d take the Browns to win this weekend. They’ve won two homes games this year; The Ravens, for which we sold our tickets, and the Steelers from which we left early. With family in town and other holiday conflicts, we sold our tickets for the Chiefs game. Time for them to pull off another meaningless upset!
